Dear Sir,

We are students of the Chemical Industries Design course, which is part of the curricula of the

Chemical Engineering graduation at Instituto Superior Técnico, the largest portuguese

engineering faculty.

This course covers several issues of new plant design, including market study, selection of

manufacturing technology, mass and heat balances, equipment sizing and specification and

feasibility evaluation.

Our work in this course consists of a project of a new plant, covering all the above-mentioned

areas, and is usually carried out by groups of 3-4 students.

As you may understand, we usually face great difficulties in obtaining detailed technical

information about the manufacturing processes commercially available, besides what can be

found in specialised literature sources like Kirk and Othmer or Mcketta.

We are working on a project for a beta-pinene plant; we want to obtain beta-pinene from alpha-pinene. 

This is the reason why we are contacting your company, since that as a manufacturer of beta-pinene, we would like to ask if you 

could make available to us some information (not confidential) about your technology. But only if you make beta-pinene from alpha-pinene.

The type of data that would be more useful includes plant flowsheets or simplified P&I's, main

operational conditions, specific consumptions of raw materials and utilities and raw materials and

final products specifications.

If you are familiar with Stanford Research Institute reports such as CEH (Chemical Economics

Handbook) or PEP (Process Economics Program), which unfortunately are not made available to

universities even for academic purposes, these are good examples of the type of information we

are looking for.

We would like to assure you that any data received from you will only be used for academic

purposes and will be treated as confidential. Should you consider it necessary, our school would

be available to sign a confidentiality agreement with your company.
